The average American won't work for less than $78,645, data finds Story by Justin Boggs • 1mo In the year since the U.S. hit its highest interest rate in more than four decades, the American workforce asked for more compensation than ever before.  According to data from the  Federal Reserve Bank of New York,  the average lowest wage Americans said they would be willing to accept for a new job was $78,645 in July 2023. It is a nearly $6,000 jump from July 2022.  Employers have had to respond to the demands of potential workers. From March-July 2023, the average offer for a new job was $69,475, which was nearly $9,000 more than the previous year.  The average expected likelihood of working beyond age 62 declined to 47.7% in July 2023 from 48.8% in July 2022, the data found.  The new data suggests that those seeking new jobs are finding better salaries than those remaining in existing...

Home Building Collapses as Market Struggles Story by Omar Mohammed • 5h New home construction in the U.S. plunged in August to a three-year low, according to data released on Tuesday, as high mortgage rates, increased cost of labor and the price of building homes took a toll on the industry. Housing starts, which are homes that builders would build, dropped by more than 11 percent to 1.28 million compared to last month and were down nearly 15 percent from the same time in 2022, the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development said. A decrease in multifamily homes construction was a big factor in the decline as they slumped by more than one-quarter. But single-family homes also experienced a downturn, falling by more than 4 percent, pointing to an overall slowdown of the sector. "High mortgage rates above 7 percent combined with low resale inventory and higher home prices are slowing hou...

Here’s why Story by Gustaf Kilander • 40m American extremists are popping up on Russian social media platforms for two reasons: One – they’re there. Two – they’re much less moderated. That’s the simple outline physics professor Neil Johnson at Georgetown University gave to The Independent over a video call. On Facebook , far-right communities are “like a PG 13 version of what they can do on other sites just because of moderation,” the Harvard-educated Brit says. “Certain kinds of symbols, hate speech, and activities can get them shut down. And since they rely on followers and support, they don’t want to be shut down.” The extremists instead post links on Facebook directing users to Russian platforms. The shooter who murdered eight people and injured another seven in a shooting in Dallas in May of this year had an account on OK.RU – a Russi...

That represents 31% of all outstanding US government debt, adding upward pressure on rates. That's still below 2020, when debt maturing within a year made up a significantly larger share. Nearly a third of all outstanding US government debt is set to mature in the next 12 months, according to an analysis from  asset management firm Apollo . A chart from Chief Economist Torsten Sløk shows that the share of US public debt set to mature in a year or less has steadily risen toward pandemic-era levels and is now at 31%. In terms of dollar amount, that's $7.6 trillion, a high not seen since early 2021.  In addition, public debt maturing in the near term...

He added his administration will seek to minimize program disruption to programs and there will not be layoffs. The city has opened more than 200 emergency shelters for the more than 110,000 migrants. Adams has said the city has spent over more tha...

The construction worker shortage is just getting worse—here's why Story by Elena Cox • 4d The U.S. is short about  4.3 million homes , according to recent estimates from Zillow, a key reason buying a home has gotten more expensive. But the simplest solution, to build more houses, has a flaw—there's no one to build them. "In the wake of the Great Recession, the residential construction industry lost 1.5 million jobs. Tens of thousands of homebuilders went out of business. The workforce really fell," explained Robert Dietz, chief economist at the National Association of Home Builders. "Building that kind of infrastructure and human capital takes time. Years later, we're still clawing our way back." With fewer workers, building homes is taking longer than ever. In 2022, it took an average of 8.3 months to build a single-family home, the longest since the  Census Bureau  began collecting data...

Cabinet approves NIS 20 million to incentivize African migrants to leave Israel The cabinet approves NIS 20 million to incentivize African migrants and asylum seekers to leave Israel, a week after violent riots broke out between politically opposed camps of Eritreans living in Israel. The government’s plan also includes about NIS 10 million in other initiatives to help Israeli communities who claim their quality of life has been adversely affected by migrants and asylum seekers. In addition, an inter-ministerial team, headed by ministry directors general, will be set up to “prevent infiltrators from harming citizens’ quality of life” and further “remove infiltrators” from Israeli neighborhoods.
